A New Nurse

What is it like to be a new nurse?? That is going to be answered differently for all of us. For me the first few weeks have flown by!! The first time I realized that I am really a nurse now is when I went to the Pyxis to pull a narcotic and I didn't have to have anyone get it out for me!!!

There are a few things you should find out your first few days though.
1. Find out what happens if your preceptor calls out or is flexed down. (Both of these happened to me and the call out was a messy situation to find someone who could precept me for the day.)
2. Make sure you and your preceptor are on the same page. (I have a wonderful preceptor!!! Y'all know I am a hand full and I don't think anyone else could get along with me and tolerate me the way my preceptor does!!)
3. Find out if your manager is an active participant on the floor. (This will tell you whether or not they can empathize with the floor nurses and advocate for them.)
4. You remember that big "D" word? Yeah that one, "delegate." We have to do that now, even with only a few patients. (Since I just stopped working as an NA, it's different being the one to do the asking, rather than being asked.)

That's all I can think of for right now. I am sure I will think of more later. Oh and make sure you check out the News and Observer on Sunday. Some of Rex's baby's (a few are mine) will be on the front page, plus they interviewed my preceptor!!! It's all about the big baby boom we are having!!
